BJP Secures Landslide Victory in West Bengal Assembly Polls, Ending Fifteen-Year Rule of TMC
West Bengal Assembly Election results deliver a historic political shift as the Bharatiya Janata Party wins over 200 seats, ending fifteen years of Trinamool Congress rule. The elections saw 93 percent turnout across two phases, marked by allegations of violence, corruption, and major scandals, alongside intense political reactions from national leadership and opposition claims of irregularities.
The elections were conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, 2026, and recorded an exceptionally high voter turnout of 93 percent. The outcome has been widely attributed to public dissatisfaction over alleged violence linked to the Trinamool Congress, accusations of corruption, and high-profile controversies, including the RG Kar rape and murder case and the Sandeshkhali incidents of assault. The Bharatiya Janata Party actively highlighted these issues during its campaign and fielded family members of victims in select constituencies, several of whom secured significant electoral victories.
Following the declaration of results on May 4, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the mandate as a “spectacular victory” and assured the implementation of effective governance. In contrast, Mamata Banerjee alleged electoral irregularities and declined to concede defeat. While the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters in Kolkata witnessed large-scale celebrations, the Trinamool Congress office remained subdued amid the unfolding political shift in the state.
The election outcome marks a significant political transformation in West Bengal, reshaping the state’s leadership after a prolonged period of incumbent rule and signaling a major realignment in its electoral landscape.
